Use a toothpick dipped in white mortar to trace the outlines of a tiny skull and crossbones onto the flag. You don’t have to be too exact: the basic outlines will be easy to recognize when the flag is flying above the ship. Use your fingers to press one end of the flag around the top of the mast. The licorice should stick without mortar.

8. To make the cannon:

For the base, use a knife to hollow out a cradle in the square candy or mini candy bar. Angle the cut slightly upward, so the cannon will point outward and upward. (Ship’s cannons are usually in solid bases like this, not on wheels, to prevent them from rolling across the deck.)

For the cannon, cut a 1½" length of the Fun Stix and lay it in the base.

(Use mortar to secure in place if necessary.) Set the cannon on the ship’s lower deck, ready to be aimed and fired! Set some malted-milk cannon balls nearby.
